Some of Yacht Racing’s who’s who<\/a> are doing a little ‘cross-training’ this week. A group of sailing pros – some who drive boats and some who drive desks – including\u00a0Andrew Palfrey – Artemis Racing coach, Mark Turner<\/a> who heads up the Extreme Sailing Series<\/a>, Extreme 40 and round the world sailor Fraser Brown and speed record chaser Paul Larsen are all competing in Europe\u2019s highest and toughest cycling challenge\u2026the Haute Route \u2013 a taste of what pro-riders do in the big Tours, day after day of huge calorie burns along with a good deal of pain and suffering!<\/p>\n

The first edition of the Haute Route has 300 riders competing as Solo, Duo or Team entries. Starting from Geneva and finishing in Nice, in total, they are pedaling more than 730km, over 15 famous Cols and grinding their way up over 17,000m of Alpine terrain; nearly twice the altitude of climbing Everest from sea level.<\/p>\n

Many professional sailors have cycling as their alternative pursuit when they are on land \u2013 including French stars Franck Cammas and Thomas Coville, and Olympic and America\u2019s Cup sailor Jochen Schumann.<\/p>\n

They are tough guys, between them they have raced around the planet on two hulls and one hull, withstood the pressure of the Olympic trials, America\u2019s Cup and the cut and thrust of everything pro-sailing brings, but the Haute Route is testing their limits\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cYour body is on a knife-edge \u2013 get the effort or fuel wrong and its all over\u2026\u201d Mark Turner<\/a>;<\/p>\n

\u201cJust a matter of hanging on for a little bit longer\u2026 I\u2019m pretty shagged\u2026\u201d Andrew Palfrey;<\/p>\n

\u201cPretty stuffed\u2026stop telling me the finish line is just round the corner\u2026.\u201d Fraser Brown;<\/p>\n

\u201cThird time in a week and it doesn\u2019t get any easier\u2026\u201d Paul Larsen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Solo sailor, Hannah White<\/a>, the youngest ever female competitor in the solo transatlantic OSTAR, also tried out the individual 12km time trial on stage 4 on Wednesday:<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a really tough event, you just can\u2019t rock up with no training and do it\u2026 \u201c She hadn\u2019t done any training. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to be easy by any stretch of the imagination\u2026\u201d She was right, 6km later\u2026 \u201cCome on heart-rate come down\u2026\u201d 8km later, the language is deteriorating: \u201cShit man, I haven\u2019t done any training, this is the easiest day and I\u2019m finding it very, very hard but I\u2019m nearly there\u2026\u201d And in the end Hannah made it, a great achievement but not sure she\u2019s going to swap sailing for cycling just yet!<\/p>\n

Also Francois Vergnol, Commercial Manager at Extreme Sailing Series<\/a> who spends his working days securing sponsorship deals for the Extreme Sailing Series is competing in a multi-national team but today suffered a near catastrophe, crashing off his bike at a roundabout. Bruised and bloodied but not beaten, he\u2019s back to ride another day tomorrow.<\/p>\n

The Haute Route finishes on Saturday in Nice and for the riders that complete the event they will know they have finished the highest and one of the hardest cyclosportive on the planet.<\/p>\n
